Historically, one of Maybach’s weak points has been tasteless, unremarkable styling.
Recent, pretty concepts, the Maybach 6 coupé and cabriolet, show scope for something far better but, given the Maybach 9 is likely to be a mildly altered version of the standard Mercedes-Benz GLS, it’s unlikely to win over those looking for a luxury SUV that stands out.
Although it makes sense for Mercedes to branch out into the ultra-high end, it has plenty to prove before gaining the credibility of a Bentley Bentayga or Range Rover. Good engineering is hopefully a given but, even so, affluent consumers will need to be convinced that this car will have the edge over its rivals, many of which possess greater badge appeal.

What is 'elusive' about a Bentley or Rolls-Royce?
She implies the Bentayga and Cullinan are tasteful. I don't think I am alone in disagreeing.
She ignores that the S600 Maybach has sold well for Mercedes globally. And she forgets that Autocar just reviewed it extremely favourably in all respects, not least price point.
The GLS is enormously successful globally, and this will be far cheaper than the Cullinan.

So you think they'd be better avoiding the current trend for luxury (and often tasteless) full-sized SUVs and let those sales go somewhere else? Ever think if Porsche would still be around if they hadn't launched the Cayenne? Thought so, as do Bentley, Rolls Royce, Maserati, and maybe even Aston Martin...

For once I agree with Rachel - completely. The current GLS is just an oversized, unsophisticated behemoth.
