This is a fine engine in the Discovery and Jaguar XJ, but it struggles to haul the Range Rover Sport or suit its character.

What's new? This is the first time we've driven the diesel Range Rover Sport in the UK. It uses the same 2.7 V6 as the Discovery. What's it like? Even with a brilliant diesel engine it lacks the pizzazz and charm of the petrol models. With sluggish off-the-line performance you question the Sport moniker as well, even though it is remarkably agile for its size and weight. It's not as quiet as the Discovery either.Should I buy one? There are better diesel 4x4s, including the new Audi Q7, Mercedes ML-Class and the Discovery. A petrol Sport is the way to go.Chas Hallett
