Renault launches Kangoo electric van costing from £16,990 exc VAT

Renault has taken the wraps off the first all-electric van, the Kangoo Van ZE (Zero Emission).

It will go on sale in the UK for £16,990 excluding VAT. The £5,000 incentive for electric cars is not currently available on light commercial vehicles.

The electric motor has a power output of 59bhp and maximum torque of 167lb ft.

The batteries are located in the centre of the vehicle under the floor and a standard charge via a 220v 16a socket takes between six and eight hours.

Functions, such as pre-heating and pre-cooling during recharging, have been integrated to maximise vehicle range.

It can already be pre-ordered, but the ownership of the vehicle is separate to that of the battery.

Customers will be able to purchase or rent the van and take out a subscription for the battery. In the UK, this will cost from £59 per month excluding VAT, based on four years, 9,000 miles per year.

The Kangoo Van ZE has a range of 100 miles on the NEDC combined cycle and can be monitored by the driver through what Renault calls an MMI (man machine interface).

This is a display that informs the driver of the remaining battery charge and operational range.

It has a gauge showing the remaining battery charge, and an econometer showing real-time and average energy consumption.

Shame about the limited range and recharge time. No good for my company, when we need to travel from the South up to Scotland...

Will this qualify for a government £5000 rebate for EVs? The £16990 price is almost £5k higher than the standard combustion-engined Kangoo van but with a rebate this might even just make financial sense for a city-based van too since the savings in fuel cost would just about pay for the battery hire.

£16990 minus VAT? Is there some sort of VAT rebate on EV purchases?
