Currently reading: Nissan's happy birthday Micra

Nissan's popular supermini has reached the grand old age of one, and Nissan is marking the occasion with the Micra XS.

Aimed at younger buyers, the new car combines appealing body styling additions with value for money. The entry-level 1.2-litre petrol three door costs from £8795; for that, you get 15in alloys, a roof spoiler, electric door mirrors, an aluminium gearknob, a sliding rear bench, and distinctive dashboard trim - £1000 worth of extra kit, for an £800 premium over the S grade.

Standard equipment on the car includes power steering, electric front windows, anti-lock braking enhanced by Nissan Brake Assist, two airbags and keyless entry.Nissan will also throw in a year's free insurance as a lure for the younger customer - but only if you sign up to its Preferences purchasing plan.

Nissan's less-powerful 65bhp 1.5-litre dCi engine is also available for the car; a five-door packing the oil-burner will set you back £10,095.

Since its January '03 launch, 46,700 Micras have been sold in the UK, and 177,000 Europe-wide.
