Late 2014 launch for all-new Volkswagen Passat, which will be based on scalable MQB platform

Development of the next Volkswagen Passat is now well advanced. This sixth-generation version will be underpinned by Volkswagen’s MQB platform and is set to go on sale late next year.

Bosses have revealed that the new car will be among the largest models based on MQB architecture. Only the 4900mm-long production version of the Crossblue Concept SUV will be larger.

A saloon is likely to be the first model launched, followed by an estate. It is not currently known when the CC four-door coupé will be replaced, but it is likely that the current CC will be produced alongside the new MQB-based Passat for a time.

The next CC will retain the swooping looks of the original, and Autocar understands a Shooting Brake version is also being considered.

The new Passat will retain the familiar engine line-up, centred on the 2.0 TDI unit in Europe. A plug-in hybrid version is also expected.

The Passat will get the latest DSG gearboxes, too, including a 10-speed version. Front drive and four-wheel drive configurations will also be offered, the latter using VW’s Haldex 5 system.

At the other end of the scale, the next Volkswagen Polo will be introduced after the current car has received a facelift. The sixth generation of the supermini will become the smallest MQB-based car. It will be about the same size as the current car.

The VW Passat is a competent family car - but does it show any flair, and does it stand out amongst established executive saloons from BMW, Audi and Mercedes?

It is listed in luxury cars in India so that we can't except that it will increase the number of sales in medium class families.
