Ultra-luxurious saloon gets a bolder look and new two-tone colour combinations to stand out from regular S-Class

Mercedes-Benz’s upmarket Maybach sub-brand has provided the S-Class saloon with an added dose of exclusivity with the unveiling of a facelifted model featuring styling elements first explored on its flamboyant Maybach 6 concept car.

On display at the Geneva motor show ahead of planned UK deliveries starting in August, the 2018 Mercedes Maybach S-Class saloon receives a bold new grille with vertical louvres similar in style to that used by the Maybach 6, together with an altered front bumper featuring a greater use of chrome within its lower section.

The new-look front end aims to provide the Maybach S-Class with greater visual differentiation to standard S-Class models and comes as Mercedes prepares to add other models to the Maybach line-up, including a plush new version of the upcoming third-generation GLS due to be unveiled at the Los Angeles motor show towards the end of the year. 

Further changes to the big four-door include a distinctive new two-tone paint scheme. Available in nine colour combinations, it comes with a double clear coat finish as a further option for darker colours, creating what Maybach describes as a piano lacquer effect and an impression of depth within the paint.

Also included in the midlife facelift is a new range of 20in wheels.

Inside, there are two new colour combinations – armagnac brown/black and savanna beige/black – and leather upholstery featuring new colour combinations for the stitching.

The Maybach S-Class is offered with a choice of two petrol engines: a turbocharged 4.0-litre V8 with 458bhp in the S560 and a turbocharged 6.0-litre V12 developing 612bhp in the S650. UK buyers will only be offered the latter.

It's like the German equivalent of the France producing all those Safranes and C6s and 604s which vanity insists they build even though no-one really wants any of them, at least until depreciation has taken it's 80% toll.

In fact they sell quite well in China and Hong Kong where restrained good taste is irrelevant. This explains why Mercedes is pushing the S class Maybach back towards the first generation OTT model.

Exact figures are hard to come by, but it looks like around 25k have been sold from 2015-17. Over the same three year period, something like 33k XJs were sold. That will give some idea of how successful or not it is, especially when you consider it will have a huge profit margin given it's S-class base.

This facelift and colour scheme harks back to the awful 57 and 62 and is as equally as hideous and tacky looking. It seems Daimler are trying again to reintroduce the Maybach brand rather than it just being a sub-brand which was the case on the current S-Class. Either way, facelift or not and Maybach or not, it seems Daimler still have no idea how to do luxury, class or taste in this class of car (or any class for that matter). They so need to acquire a Bentley Mulsanne or Rolls Royce Ghost to see how to do luxury.

merc are still suffering the consequences of not buying rr or bentley when they had the chance.  the other 2 big german brands each have an ultra luxury premium brand with kudos and both are doing really well.  the only option merc has left is buy AML and leave the ultra luxury market to lagonda.  have amg manufacture the v8 and v12 engines to astons and lagondas specifications, merc supply all the tech, gadgets and electronics then decide who does the racing.  aston cuts all ties to f1 leaves that to merc-amg and focuses on gt racing and endurance class

Looks like a pregnant whale playing a mouth organ. Almost as tasteless as the latest Phantom. Why take the rather handsome and restrained S class and turn it into a gargoyle? Beats me.
