The shortlist of seven nominations for the Car of the Year 2019 award has been announced

A shortlist of seven nominations for the Car of the Year 2019 award has been announced, chosen from 38 eligible candidates.

The seven finalists are the Alpine A110, Citroën C5 Aircross, Ford Focus, Jaguar I-Pace, Kia Ceed, Mercedes-Benz A-Class and Peugeot 508.

Eligible cars must essentially be new models, and available in at least five European countries at the time of voting.

Some 60 judges, representing 23 European countries, select the shortlist in a simple vote. Second-stage voting takes place in the new year, with the winning car announced at the Geneva motor show in March.

Autocar is one of seven organising publications. The Volvo XC40 won the Car of the Year 2018 award.

Neither the Focus, A-class or

Neither the Focus, A-class or Ceed move the game on so they shouldn't win. It would be great if the Alpine won, but the last 'expensive sports car' to win was the Porsche 928, many moons ago. Given the inadequacies with the iPace (range, charging, price) I predict the Peugeot 508 will win.

Alpine for me

The Alpine is a breath of fresh air in the sports car sector and for me, it has to be the COTY. Can't agree with others about the I-Pace, it doesn't really move the game along much. The Kona would be a more deserving candidate as it makes EV ownership much more realistic for many. Though the suggestion from xxxx of a 8-9 month wait for a Kona isn't so good.

I have heard stories of people waiting longer than that for a Golf, and I know people who have waited longer for a BMW.

Gotta be the Alpine, what a car that has proven to be! I'm sure the iPace will probably win, it's also a decent winner, but I would just love it to be the Alpine.

I'd love it to be the Alpine too, the antithesis to the dreary SUV landscape.
